December 2010

A lot has been going on at Cinema Makeup School since September!

Some of our interns have moved on from the CMS staff to do bigger and better things. Christopher Hernandez has been working for the legendary Rick Baker at his studio, Cinnovation. Chris has been lucky enough to be a part of the magic for the upcoming Men In Black 3, and also worked with studio ADI, on Predators, released this past July. Tomo Hayashi has been hard at work with Legacy Studios, working on blockbusters like Twilight’s Eclipse, Thor, and Cowboys and Aliens.

Instructor Steve Costanza brought Graduate Jennifer Quinteros to assist him on set of the upcoming Hellraiser film.  Jennifer has also been working with productions associated with Maxim magazine, as well as assisting Alex Nobel on an upcoming film featuring Micheal Ironside (Top Gun, Total Recall, The Machinist) and Rutina Wesley (True Bloods Tara Thorton)

As IMATS moved on to other cities, so did our graduates who entered into the student competitions. In Sydney Australia, Chikako Kitaba took second place with her Grimm Fairy tale witch interpretation. A few oceans and countries over in Toronto, CMS had it’s hands full with praise as grad Miranda Jory competed in both the beauty and character competitions and then proceeded to take first in both competitions! Miranda is only the second competitor in history to take first in each competition.

Grad Alysha Marcantonio has been making her  rounds  in the music video scene, acting as Head Makeup and Hair department for artists like Snoop Dogg, Ian Carey, Bobby Anthony, Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, Quietdrive, and Veil of Maya, just to name a few.

Ivy Choi has been hard at work with photo shoots, short films, weddings, and commercials. Ivy recently wrapped a music video with Hot Hot Heat filmed outside of LA in the hot hot desert.

Alicia Caterisano is rocking Dallas TX with her makeup skills, spending her time representing Sephora retailers as a color artist. Alicia also lent her skills to “The Fatal End” haunted house outside of Dallas for Halloween, turning actors into zombies and scary, scary clowns.

Alaina Parkhurst is currently working with Magee FX studios in North Hollywood. Magee FX had the great responsibility of putting together all the Grinch and Who make-ups for Universal Studios 2010 “Grinchmas Celebration”. Alaina is running foam, laying hair, and painting appliances for the upcoming showcase.

Brenna Deutscher’s new ventures have been abundant lately; she has been working on everything from beauty to fx. It’s been a year since her graduation and already she has 15 films (features and shorts), 2 TV pilots, 2 music videos, 2 main commercials, a star studded DVD release, a circus, a handful of photographers and a lab job under her belt.

Jenny Kong has been hard at working building her portfolio, working on fashion shows and assisting as much as possible. Jenny has assisted instructor Mireille Bertrand on multiple underwater shoots and recently completed a beauty shoot with actress Arden Cho.

Over in Italy, Laura Rocchigiani is working with the dance company Apsaras, who were honored to perform at the Italian Premier of “Eat, Pray, Love”. Laura designed and applied the Bollywood style makeup on the dancers and attended the premier with the company.

Students from all over the world come to grace the halls of Cinema. This past month we have not only had new students arriving at our doors, but cameras and crew as well. A Korean film crew representing South Korean Educational Broadcasting System, one of the largest channel providers in South Korea, came to interview and tape students hard at work. EBS came to showcase the schools proficiency in makeup for the film Industry. We were also proud to open our doors to a French television company for their version of “60 minutes”. The crew followed current students Julian Bonfiglio and Gehan Mohamed for a few days, capturing their life at home, at school, and on set.

CMS receives calls from Directors, Producers, and agency’s alike looking for up and coming makeup artists to assist on their projects. In November, over 20 CMS grads and students drove out to sunny Rancho Mirage to work on a Miss California/Miss Teen California pageant. Students and Alumni did hair and makeup touch ups on all the contestants throughout the pageant. Current student Ramon Blanco was one lucky artist when he was selected to do the makeup for both the Miss and Miss teen winners!

CMS was once again heavily involved with LA Fashion Week. Some of the shows our current students and graduates participated in are as follows : LA’s Fashion Night Out with our instructor Mireille Bertrand as lead team makeup artist along with graduates Jenny Kong, Melia Valeros and Kristina Katai. Up Next : L.A. Designers Installation & Runway Show at EM & Co Boutique, A Night in Paris and a fashion show sponsored by Louis Vuitton at the Beverly Hills Hilton with our students Aprille Ricafranca, Norelle Soriano and Nonomari Yanagida. Other CMS students and graduates who made LA Fashion Week shine include Simon Calac, Courtney Clarke, Lori Rourke, Anna Holmes, Sara Rodriguez, Yumiko Murao, Heather Roach, Yukiko Kondo, Ritu Janjani, Mari Idaka, Kelli Gasaway, June Kim, Michelle Almanza, Britny Olsen, Kristal Pitts, Melissa Otine, Laetitia Anguh, Jyll King, Tabitha Swanson, Alisyah Sarip, Teresa Chan, Gina Luzi, Hailey Mintz, Krystal George, Katy Hill, Brianna Acosta, Catherine Yoo, Sophie Chotard and Shinae Go.

Cinema Makeup School was featured on EBS, Korea’s largest public broadcasting network. The show featured international education at one of the best makeup schools in the world, CMS. This program was viewed worldwide.

The French Program 50 Min Inside, channel TF1 France (which is much like the U.S 60 minutes) came to Cinema Makeup School to do a documentary, featuring two of our students. TF1 is one of the biggest TV Channels in France.
