Congratulations to Film & Television student Tuesday Hammerl for placing 2nd in the beauty/fantasy competition!
The event began Saturday with High Fashion Instructor Mireille Bertrand creating an avant-garde editorial makeup and preparing onlookers for what was to come Sunday when CMS hosted the first ever IMATS Fashion Show.  Students and graduates were on hand as makeup artists and hairstylists for the wildly anticipated show which drew a standing room only audience.

Digital FX instructor Tim Turner (Army of Darkness, Harry and the Hendersons, Addams Family) taught a class entitled “Digital Makeup Demystified”.  Tim and sculpting instructor Jim Kagel (The Thing, Child’s Play, 300) joined us in the booth for demonstrations both days.

Sunday had CMS Director of Education and Emmy Nominated make-up artist Leonard Engelman (Moonstruck, The Princess Diaries, Batman and Robin) presenting the “How to Win an Oscar” seminar. Nelly Recchia, airbrush instructor and award-winning makeup artist, appeared in the booth transforming her model into a lovely leopard complete with a foam latex head appliance.
 
With attendance at the show more than doubled from 2008, the CMS booth drew a huge crowd throughout the weekend and was an accomplishment by any standard. We thank everyone for their hard work and dedication to their craft.

The collaboration of CMS and Famous Monsters of Filmland made the four day event in San Diego a huge success. Graduates Christopher Hernandez and Ali Magee presented daily applications, transforming graduate Robert Lindsay into the ghoulish Nosferatu while our Director of Admissions, Lee Joyner, sculpted away on a new maquette, inviting awe-struck attendees to get a different perspective on the craft.  Come visit us next year for even more special fx makeup and sculpting demonstrations!

2009 marked the inaugural year for Monsterpalooza and CMS was proud to be a participant and a sponsor.   Friday had Director of Admissions Lee Joyner (Godzilla, Mimic, Stargate SG:1) and graduate Tomo Hayashi applying a multi-piece silicone gel-filled appliance, designed and sculpted by Lee in the likeness of Jack Pierce, and molded and cast by Tomo,  to actor Perry Shields.  Graduate Christopher Hernandez assisted in various stages, as well as graduate Miyo Nakamura providing a custom made makeup tunic.  Perry performed a one man play written by Jack Pierce historian Scott Essman to the delight of those in attendance.  Saturday, Instructor Ralis Kahn (Slipknot, P.Diddy, Marilyn Manson) held a class demonstrating many of the blood FX he has utilized in his career (with the splatter mostly contained – at least the blood was washable!).  He was assisted by CMS graduates Tomo Hayashi and Christopher Hernandez. 
With a walk-thru museum, original artwork, collectibles and many special guests, Monsterpalooza was a blast and we can’t wait to do it again in 2010! You can view a video of the event and the special silicone application our Youtube page.

Four-time Academy Award winner Greg Cannom joined us at the school for a very special presentation about his work on “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” and his innovative use of silicone and transfer appliances. Greg brought one of his Academy Awards, and many examples of the actual appliances used in “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”.  Greg also presented a visual treat to the audience, showing never before seen images of behind the scene pictures of the applications of his career, including makeups from “Hannibal”, “Dracula” and even a rare treat from “Thriller” with Michael Jackson of Greg himself sporting zombie makeup!  The seminar, which was packed with industry professionals and budding makeup artists alike, was enjoyed by all and we look forward to many more events in the future.  You can read all about the seminar at Fangoria's website.
