Welcome to Cinema Makeup School's E-Newsletter,
which is created to keep you informed of what's going on at Cinema
Makeup School. It features news about our students, alumni and esteemed
instructors.
We would like to thank all of our graduates for referring their
friends, family and acquaintances. We really appreciate all of your
kind words!
Cinema Makeup School would like to welcome two new instructors
to its roster. Character instructor Leonard Engelman
has worked with some of the most beautiful leading ladies and handsome
leading men in the entertainment industry. His artistry ranges from
the beauty of Cher in “Moonstruck”; both Cher
and Michelle Pfieffer in “Witches of Eastwick”;
Meg Ryan in “Sleepless in Seattle”; Juliann
Moore in “Roommates”; and Julie Andrews in
“Princess Diaries”. He has also created wonderful
make-up to the bruised and battered Val Kilmer in “Heat”;
Chris O’Donnell in “Batman & Robin”;
and Sylvester Stallone in “Rambo” and “Rocky
IV”. His work spans from film to television productions,
commercials, music videos, magazine covers, and editorials. Mr.
Engelman has been nominated for Emmy Awards and received awards
from the Local 706 Makeup Artist and Hair Stylist Union.
Natalie MacGowan-Spencer, a union make-up artist
herself and the most recent addition to our Beauty and High Fashion
team, has an extensive background in advertising, editorials, and
music videos. She has worked with such actors as George Clooney, Dennis
Hopper, Samuel L. Jackson, Keanu Reeves, Kate Winslet, Naomi Watts,
and Cameron Diaz. Natalie’s music video work ranges from Blondie,
Celine Dion and Ben Harper to Beastie Boys, Dr. Dre, and Jay Z. We
are very excited to have both of these artists contributing their
substantial skills and in-depth knowledge of the industry to our students.
Mark Maitre has joined Cinema as part of our Prosthetics
and Special Makeup FX Instructor Team. Mark has a varied and experienced
career in special makeup effects, from sculpting to application,
having worked with the greatest FX Labs in Hollywood such as Stan
Winston Studios, Patrick Tatopolous Designs, K.N.B. FX and many
others. Some of his projects include: Underworld: The Relic,
Stargate, Halloween 5, Nightmare On Elm St: Dream Child, Spider-man
3, Jurassic Park 3, Alien Vs. Predator 2, Ray, The Cell, Spy Kids,
War Of The Worlds, AI: Artificial Intelligence, Hellboy, The Time
Machine, and The Green Mile.
CMS graduate Amy Strozzi is currently Make-up
Department Head for the hit Fox television show “So You
Think You Can Dance”, along with being host Cat Deeleys’
personal make-up artist. She is also make-up artist for the WB tv
series “Smallville” for its publicity photos.
Congratulations to Amy on her achieving Local 706 Makeup Artist
and Hairstylists Union membership! Graduate Michelle Bankson
has been working personally with Lisa Loeb for her music videos
and appearances, and congratulations to Michelle for achieving Local
706 Union status as well! You can view Michelle’s work with
Lisa, with graduate Aubrey Jensen assisting, at Youtube, with the
release of the new music video by Rin, "Anti Hero", featuring
Lisa Loeb.
Master Make-up Program graduate Corinne Dutra
is now employed full time by Cheri Montesanto-Medcalf.
Cheri is the Make-up Department Head for CSI: Miami, having
received multiple Emmys for her amazing work on The X-Files.
Corinne worked as an intern for Cheri on an episode earlier this
year.
Beauty and Hairstyling Instructor, Michel Lejeune,
will be leading the make-up and hairstyling department for the 2006
World Championships of Performing Arts. High Fashion graduate
Amanda Banfield will join him. The WCOPA is the first and only international
series of competitions to find the best aspiring performing artists.
Our congratulations go out to graduates Graham Schofield
and Ricky Luevano, Graham has been hired to work
as a lab technician at W.M. Creations, where he is working on Rocky
Balboa. Ricky is a runner at Spectral Motion Inc., where he
is working on Fantastic Four 2. Graham has recently wrapped production
on “Bad Blood Days”, a zombie film with the
help of graduates Iris Sutalo, Corinne
Dutra and Liz Mendoza as well as the short
film “Chalk” with Iris Sutalo.
Aubrey Jensen, graduate of the Master Program,
has finished working as Key Make-up and Hair for the Al Pacino documentary/film
entitled “Salomaybe”, with graduates Catlin
Carroll and Gage Hubbard assisting. Aubrey
has been keeping busy working as an assistant to Character instructor
Alex Noble. They have wrapped production on two
films, “Lady Magdalene’s”, written and
directed by J. Neil Schulman, and “American Fork”,
directed by Chris Bowman.
Christopher Del Castillo, a Senior Artist from
the MAC Cosmetics PRO Team, paid a visit to CMS in May to give a
lecture and demo on Fall Trends for 2006. Speaking of MAC, grads
Summer Fuller and Tara Schmidt
have both just been hired as MAC make-up artists here at the Beverly
Center in Los Angeles.
Cinema Makeup School participated in the annual fundraiser, A Time
For Heroes; Celebrity Carnival, for the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric
Aids Foundation. The Foundation creates a future of hope for
children and families worldwide by eradicating pediatric AIDS, providing
care and treatment to people with HIV/AIDS, and accelerating the
discovery of new treatments for other serious and life-threatening
pediatric illnesses. Graduates Ken Rizzo, Stephanie
Gomez, Rigoberto Sosa, Julie Yi,
Liz Mendoza, and Pixie Acia all
represented CMS, applying gelatin pieces and character makeup.
Character instructor Ralis Kahn has just returned
from Mexico City where he was working on the set of “Resident
Evil 3”. Ralis and his band, Dead By Day, are also heading
out on domestic tour.

Congratulations to Hiromi Takeda for being accepted
into the Character Makeup Competition and Pixie Acia
for being accepted into the Fantasy Makeup Competition at this year’s
IMATS. The Character Competition was based on a Harry Potter
theme while the Fantasy Competition was a Midsummer’s Night
Dream theme. This is the biggest trade show for make-up artists,
held annually in Pasadena, California, and sponsored by the Make-up
Artist Magazine.
We would also like to thank our Instructors Mark Maitre,
Mirelle Bertrand, and Nelly Recchia
for their participation at IMATS on behalf of Cinema Makeup School.
Mirelle’s class was entitled “Inventing the Avant-Garde
for Fashion Editorials.” Mark held a lecture and demo on Multi-piece
Silicone Gel Filled Prosthetic Appliances. Mark, along with Johnnie
Saiko, is working on Alien vs. Predator 2 with Amalgamated
Dynamics Inc.
Recent graduates Andy Chavez, Roberto Molina, Ken Rizzo,
Corinne Dutra, Heather O’Boyle and Ricky
Luevano, all worked as lab techs for sfx artist Steve
Wang. Steve was hired to create a display sculpture (that
was over 9 feet tall!) of Illidian, from the game “World of
Warcraft” for the E3 videogame convention here in L.A. Graduate
Casey Love was a team sculptor and graduate Diana
Yoo created the hair mastery. Both Casey and Diana are
employed by Spectral Motion Inc. as well as working with other top

Sandra Hakim, a graduate of the Professional Makeup
Course, worked on “El Contente” starring Jennifer
Lopez and Marc Anthony as an assistant make-up artist. She worked
with Spanish star Elsa Patke during New York Fashion Week, and,
in August, she began on an as yet untitled film starring Antonio
Banderas.
Graduate Kazuyuki Okada was recently interviewed
by the Japanese magazine Anokuni de Korega Yaritai. The article
focused on Japanese students who had gone to school abroad and have
become successful in their careers. Kazu’s work is also featured
in a new werewolf film “Neowolf”. Kazu himself was mentioned
in an article at Fangoria’s website with pictures of his work:

Sarah Tarling, a Master Makeup Program graduate,
is currently working on her new film based on an H.P. Lovecraft
tale in Maine. She is helming the directors, producers and fx artists
positions.
The world’s most popular and longest-running horror magazine
continues to present the greatest and most star-studded live horror
events ever held. The Fangoria Weekend of Horrors
took place over three days in June. CMS represented themselves strongly,
along with instructor Ralis Kahn and his band Dead by Day, helping
to spread the fx goodness to all the horror fans in Burbank from
around the world!
Tom Devlin, Prosthetics and Special Effects instructor,
has been keeping himself and graduates Liz Mendoza,
Gage Hubbard, Kazuyuki Okada, busy with films including;
“Butcher House”, “Halloween Nights”,
“Ed Gein: The Butcher of Plainfield”. Gage and
Liz also worked together on the short film “The Wind Fisherman”.
Liz is currently in production on “Erased”.
Graduate Keri Payne has been working as Key Make-up
and Hair on an Independent Film, “Dead Scourge”
as well as a music video for the band Net Zero.
Cinema Makeup School has moved its Beauty and High Fashion classes
to a new, larger, open and airy suite on the second floor that also
holds a new break lounge, student reference library and computers,
a separate area for the wardrobe and photography studio, and the
classroom for our upcoming Digital Makeup Design Course. We’ve
also added new signage on the outside of the Wiltern Theater complex.
