Welcome to Cinema Makeup School's E-Newsletter,
which is created to keep you informed of what's going on at Cinema
Makeup School. It features news about our students, alumni and esteemed
instructors.
CMS News:
CMS Director of Education and Academy Governor Leonard Engelman
is inviting you to join us at the 80th Academy Awards, Oscar-Nominated
Makeup Artist and Hairstylist Symposium to be held at the Academy’s
Samuel Goldwyn Theater (8949 Wilshire Blvd., Beverly Hill 90210)
on February 23, 2008 at 2:30 p.m.
The doors will open at 1:30 p.m. for an opportunity to see displays
of the three films that will be nominated for this years Oscar for
Best Achievement in Makeup. The program will involve the makeup
artists and hairstylist nominated explaining the involvements of
the makeup, 10 minute film clips showing, especially, and the makeup
from the three films and an opportunity for questions and answers
with the audience. Following the program will be food and beverages
again with an opportunity to see the makeup artists and hairstylists
at their displays.
Admission is free. Apply for your ticket at www.oscar.com.

your reservation early!
Last year’s Symposium was a great success and a great opportunity
for CMS students and graduates to meet the nominated makeup artists
and hairstylist for the films “Pan’s Labyrinth”,
“Click”, and “Apocalypto”.
Cinema Makeup School is heading to IMATS in London at the end of
January. We will be located at booth 509 showcasing our Digital
FX course with Digital FX Instructor Tim Turner (Harry and the Henderson’s,
Honey I Shrunk the Kids, The Addams Family, Army of Darkness, Sleepwalkers,
CSI, Las Vegas).

Gil Mosko: Multi-Emmy Winner: "Star Trek", "Alias",
"Face/Off", "Holes", "How the Grinch Stole
Christmas", and the upcoming "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom
of the Crystal Skull".
Joe Podnar has joined us here at CMS teaching our character class.
Joe has worked on films such as: "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom
of the Crystal Skull", "Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse
of the Black Pearl", "Star Trek", "How the Grinch
Stole Christmas", and "Venom".
CMS is now offering a one week workshop with instructor Jim Kagel.
Students will be learning fundamental aspects of Special FX makeup
sculpture design. They will present a finished sculpture/Maquette
utilizing armature and sculpting techniques. Jim’s work has
been seen on films such as "Killer Klown from Outer Space",
"The Thing", "Friday the 13th", "Child’s
Play", "300" and more. Jim has designed some of the
famous characters that we all know and love. We are excited to offer
this as part of the Master makeup course here at CMS. Contact the
school for more information about this course.
Jordu Schell is joining the staff as one of our Digital FX makeup
instructors. Jordu has worked on films such as: "Nemesis",
"Alien: Resurrection", "Face/Off", "Scary
Movie 3", and "The X Files".
Airbrush instructor Nelly Recchia has just returned to LA form New
York where she was working on the popular show "America’s
Next Top Model".

Seung Young Lee, Chris LeCurc, Amy Park, Nicole Perry, Stella Koh
and Stepfani Talavera worked with the contestants for the Miss California
Pageant with the Miss Universe Organization- NBC and Donald Trump
partnership.
Graduate Carla Mora is now working as High Fashion instructor Mireille
Bertrand’s assistant.
Master Graduate Simpat Beshirian worked as a member of the skeleton
crew for an upcoming movie on DVD called “The Stone House"
and the shop Almost Human. He had the privilege to go on tour with
Instructor Ralis Kahn’s band Dead by Day for 3 weeks as a
makeup artist for the band, and also worked with Ralis on a big
haunt out in Bakersfield called "The Chamber" (www.chamberhaunt.com
).
ADI (Amalgamated Dynamics Inc.), an Academy Award winning makeup
effects studio, has hired on master graduates Morgan Muta in the
lab, Ian Lome in the design department and Libby Pierson in the
office.
Master graduate Kalyani Thiruchelvum is currently employed by Napoleon
Perdis as their Northeast National Education Trainer. She has recently
done advertorials for Clairol Hair Color that will be featured in
the March issue of Essence magazine. Kalyani has also been published
in Ebony magazine, New York Post Pulse Fashion editorials titled
" Tailor-made Work-outs", "Girls Gone Wildlife",
" Ten Commandments of Highs and Lows", "Looks to
go from Day to Night", "Mind your Manor", which was
shot on location in the Berkshire Mountains, and "Damsels in
Distress". She is head makeup artist for the TV show called
"Waiting for Style", which is being produced by Nole Marin
of America's Next Top Model and is planned to be shown on MTV.
Graduate Renee Saia was featured on E! TV on “12 Sexiest
Jobs of 2007”
Graduate Ferra Abbassi got the privilege to work with celebrity
stylist and designer Kami Shade, whose celebrity clients have included
Sharon Stone, the Pussycat Dolls, Lauren Conrad and Katie Lohmann.
Cinema Makeup School joined in with Long Beach City Chamber of Commerce
for their University by the Sea festival celebrating art, film,
and culture.
Hannah Lux Davis went as our videographer and Cody Opdegrave and
Joseph Alexander were our photographers for Cypress Hill’s

to see these makeup artists in action. Jodi Sherbin, Willy Vanzuela,
Midori Saito, Kaitlin Kincaid, Devon Siegel, Kristin Darby, Reyna
Garcia, Nick Scarboro, Troy Wheeler, Cynthia Ochoa, Kristina Cardone,
Renee Saia, Jacqueline Butcher, Rigo Sosa, Courtney Soto, and Kana
Fujioka did zombie makeup.
Stepfani Talavera, Magen Ford, Alexandra Cathers, Binh Au, Nino
Demuriyan, and Amy Chiorino joined with Art of Elysium and helped
complete costumes with face painting for children with cancer, who
were spending Halloween in the hospital.
Cinema Makeup School was proud to be a participant in the Fresh
Films Youth Fest 2007 at AFI Festival. Fresh Films is a program
geared towards helping High School students prepare for a career
in the film industry. CMS Instructor Steve Costanza and Graduate
Liz Mendoza did a demonstration on Injury Simulation. As the demonstration
was given, questions were answered as many of the students were
interested in our programs! There was a lot of excitement as the
demonstration came to a conclusion; students came up afterwards
to get a better look!
The producer of Napoleon Dynamite Jeremy Coon was also a guest at
this event. Along with Jon Gries and Efren Ramirez who starred in
the film. Together they offered advice to the new filmmakers and
presented them with awards and scholarships!
