CMS News

Jordu Schell, a celebrity guest instructor at CMS for our Digital FX Makeup Design class, was featured on 60 Minutes showing some of his sculptures for the blockbuster hit by James Cameron, Avatar.  We are excited for his accomplishment with his maquettes and incredible designs!

Cinema Makeup School is proud to announce that Leonard Engelman, CMS' Director of Education, has been given the honor to join the "Irish Film and Television Academy, Los Angeles" as a Founding Member. He will be involved in the selection of the nominees for their Makeup Academy Awards, and will be a voting member for all awards as well. A veteran in the Industry, and the first Governor of the Makeup Branch on the Board of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, we are sure Leonard will make a great contribution to this Academy and we are happy to have him as a continuous component to Cinema Makeup School.

Cinema Makeup School made an appearance at the 2010 International Makeup Artist Trade Show this past January.  Director of Admissions Lee Joyner was sculpting in the booth, representing our new Creature Maquette Sculpture Class (unique to CMS). Graduate and technical Emmy Award winner Carlton Coleman applied a silicone gel-filled appliance (sculpted and designed by Lee Joyner, lab work by CMS graduates Tomo Hayashi and Chris Hernandez).  Carlton was showcasing CMS’ cutting edge application instruction in plastic encapsulated platinum gel silicone appliances. 

Instructor Work

Beauty/High Fashion Instructor Mireille Bertrand’s work was featured in the March volumes of Elle and Harper’s Bazaar magazines. The editorials were for designer Sue Wong in collaboration with Disney for the film Alice of Wonderland. Sue Wong provided clothing for the movie and the editorial was sponsored by KohGenDo and Urban Decay.

Sunday, January 31, 2010, CMS students participated in Long Beach’s International Salon and Spa Expo.CMS Instructor Mireille Bertrand and her crew of current students, including Jennifer Quinteros, Lacie Guzman, Lauren Bracco, Tara McKinney, April Koeberle, Katherine Chandler, Adriana Arreguin, Yadira Covarrubias, Jessica Morais, and Veronica Gil Duran did makeup and hair for Fusion Tool Company’s grand opening for the ISSE main stage.  Pale skin, red glitter, red lips and dark eyes with sequins were all the rage for this glamorous vampire inspired makeup design.  It was a success for Long Beach's biggest hair show and for Mireille and her passionate crew.

Pictured below, we have past instructors and featured seminar artists Brad Look and Bill Corso creating special makeup fx masterpieces in Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, with the prosthetics applications headed up by Mike Smithson.

Graduate/Student Work

Graduates Tuesday Coren & Marissa Williams were hired by legendary makeup artist Ve Neill to work alongside her onThe Pee-Wee Herman Show” at Club Nokia in Los Angeles. Ve has won 3 Oscars for her work on Ed Wood, Beetle Juice and Mrs. Doubtfire, and is currently the Chief Makeup Artist on her fourth Pirates of the Caribbean film On Stranger Tides.  The show, which was a re-imagined revival of the original stage show (of which Ve was the original makeup artist), was a smash hit and ran between January 12 and February 7, 2010.

“Man behind the Monster,” a Monster Makeup series hosted by Famous Monsters of Filmland in partnership with Cinema Makeup School, showcased graduates Liz Mendoza and Gage Munster sharing some monster makeup tricks. Check out the link below to watch!

CMS students and graduates:  Adriana Arreguin, Nina Besseling , Lauren Bracco, Jennifer Cabezas, Katherine Chandler, Jammey Colby,  Mae Ann Cortez, Yadira Covarrubias, Jessica Dahan,  Jennifer Evans, Ariel Gieseman,  Jennifer Godinez, Joanna Gonzalez, Jen Gutierrez, Maria Landoni, Alysha Marcantonio, Jessica Morais,  Trang Nguyen, Jennifer Pierce, Jennifer Quinteros, Leann Richey, Laura Rippoll, Heather Roach, Francoise Saint-Pierre, Preetisheel Singh, Melia Valeros, and Nicole Vieira enhanced numerous fashion shows with their makeup & hair skills during Los Angles Fashion Week including shows for EM &Co, Supastar Clothing, Hope in the City, Runway Rockway, Fashion Week in Wonderland, Next Fashion Week and Playmates of Hollywood.

CMS students and graduates were thrilled to be a part of the 82nd Annual Academy Awards Governor’s Ball. The cocktail waitress dresses, waiter uniforms and orchestra dresses were all specially designed to fit this year’s motif “Streamline Moderne”, the students and graduates completed the look by creating 1930’s style hair and makeup.

2009 Master graduate Danielle Barkat has been working on a variety of projects including music videos for Alice In Chains as well as the makeup for their new album's EPK.  Danielle was the key makeup artist for two episodes of “Surviving Disaster” which aired on Spike TV this past fall, worked on a Funny or Die exclusive with Zachary Quinto, as well as a pilot episode with Laura Kightlinger and interned at Creative Character Engineering for “Let Me In”, the American remake of “Let the Right One In”. Most recently she worked in the FX Makeup department on a horror film that shot in Iowa in September and now is in Louisiana keying a film starring Liv Tyler and Patrick Wilson.

Stephanie Kelly, a March 2009 Master Makeup Graduate, has been keeping busy in her hometown of Columbus, GA where she worked as the Special Makeup Effects Dept. Head on the feature film “Demonica's Reign”, recently completed an infomercial that is set to be released April 2010 and is currently working on the special effects for a short film due to shoot in Wilmington, NC.  This summer Stephanie will be joining senior makeup artist Lauren Favorule, also a CMS graduate, and her team for a 2 week adventure doing a fashion/makeup show on a Cruise Line throughout Greece and Italy.  Primarily her work has been in high fashion, editorial and photo shoots, and has been published twice in Her Magazine and once in Senior Mode Magazine; she will be travelling to New York this month for a 3 day editorial/senior shoot.  Stephanie will be opening her own makeup studio, S.Kelly Makeup; she will provide services for editorial, high fashion, model portfolio shoots, senior shoots, bridal, prom and TV/Film/Special Effects.

Simpat Beshirian created and applied the three-stage special fx makeup for the short filmOverlap” shot in Florida, graduates Scott Willis and Robert Lindsay assisted with the lab work in Los Angeles. Simpat  worked with CMS instructor Ralis Kahn doing lab work for the film “Slumdog Virgin”,  made up the members of Combichrist for their Halloween show “Zombichrist”, and is currently creating a prosthetic gorilla arm for 3 Gorillas Moving and Storage Company in Arizona.
