Congratulations to graduates Miyo Nakamura, Saori Nakada and Ashley Kim! They have been selected to participate in the Canadian Makeup Show’s student competition! Saori won 1st place in the Bodypainting competition, with Miyo capturing 3rd place!
XBOX Monster Makeover
The Monster Makeover takes you behind the scenes with the artists who create the creatures you love to fear. The competition was shot on location at CMS October 8th – 12th, featuring graduates Erin Dellamore, Morgan Muta, Robert Lindsay, Lea Willard, Simpat Beshirian, Tomo Hayashi, Liz Mendoza, Hyunwoo Heo, Jordan Curtain, Lindsey Summerfelt, Lymari Millot, Shaun Martin, Marta Heitz, Steve Webber, Tara Lang, Troy Wheeler, Sara Choi, Willy Valenzuela, Rigoberto Sosa and Kayla Barry.
Each episode gave the contestants a limited amount of time to transform a model into a gruesome ghoul based on various Xbox games. Judges Leonard Engelman and Lee Joyner were joined by Mike Elizalde from Spectral Motion Inc. and Michael Key, Editor-in-Chief of Makeup Artist Magazine for the final days of judging. The winner received an Xbox 360 Elite, Xbox games, a 4gb Zune and will be hired by Spectral Motion Inc. as a lab assistant for a film or television project!

Congratulations to Master graduate Sherri Zebeck! Sherri was interviewed for Oct. 5th’s Los Angeles Times newspaper after her Emmy winning work on HBO’s “John Adams.”
Graduate Sandra Hakim was in Iraq recently where she works as the program coordinator for the nonprofit organization War Kids Relief. The organization’s mission is to help disadvantaged children and promote peace through art and music.http://www.childrenscultureconnection.com/WarKidsRelief.html
CMS donated makeup kits that were distributed to students of Suleimaniyah University. They are being used in the art and media department. It looks like there will now be a new makeup class in the department thanks to their receipt of the kits.
CMS was honored to offer The Art of Elysium, a nonprofit organization dedicated to enriching the lives of critically ill children through art and music, the skills of our students and graduates who traveled to local children’s hospitals for Halloween face painting.
Willy Valenzuela, Master graduate, performed makeup demonstrations for an episode of Alarma TV, on Los Angeles channel 62. Willy and graduate Liz Mendoza used prosthetic pieces to turn the female host in to a vampire/demon.
Ashleigh Louer (http://www.ashleighlouer.com)moved to Paris, France for 3 months after her 2007 graduation from the Professional Makeup Artistry course. She worked as a freelance makeup artist on the skincare campaign Votre Vu, and two fashion editorials: an 8-page spread for FashionTale Magazine (Sweden) Autumn 2008 issue http://www.fashiontalemagazine.se/magazine#/32/7/ and a 2-page spread for WAD Magazine (Paris) Summer 2008 issue. She recently returned to Los Angeles where she has been busy freelancing on films & photo shoots, most recently doing makeup for promo shots for musician Mickey Avalon, and on music videos for Director Travis Kopach. Ashleigh was the key makeup artist for the band Envy on the Coast’s “Mirrors” video and 3Oh!3’s “Don’t Trust Me” video which will be premiering on MTV’s TRL shortly. She also was one of the makeup artists for Saving Abel’s “18 days” video.
Master graduate Liz Mendoza recently completed the filming of the “Sun Devil and the Princess”, Instructor Rob Burman was key makeup effects, assisted by Liz who was key makeup and hair. Liz is about to begin work as the makeup department head on the film “Little Bug” by Burnt Pictures, graduates Tracy Raffelson and Saori Nakada will be assisting.
Master graduate Bridget Clarke was key makeup artist for the film “Turn me on Dead Man”, she brought fellow Master graduates Melody Marquez and Christine Bleak on to assist her.
Q-Vitaya Deerattakul, a 1997 graduate, is the owner of Q FX Workshop, a very established makeup effects company based out of Bangkok, Thailand. www.qfxworkshop.com
CMS students and graduates, Emily Nakasone, Sita Schmidt, Erica Acevedo, Vanessa Gomez, Ashley Kim, Hyejin Lee, Scott Willis, Charleett Lopez, Miyo Nakamura, Mariko Katano, Allison Hamilton, Abigail Bradley and Leo Elguea participated in the University by the Sea, an annual event held in Downtown Long Beach. University by the Sea is a 12 hour day of classes, music, live arts and food, CMS’ representatives created face paintings and character makeup for the attendees.
Master graduate Charles Young and current Master student Allison Hamilton represented CMS at the annual Hollywood Chamber of Commerce All Hallows Eve fundraiser held at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery on October 30th.
Miyo Nakamura and Crystal Fosmark, both recent Master graduates, created makeup for an ad for the upcoming action-adventure video game, Mirror’s Edge.
Master graduate Kayla Barry worked with effects artist Steve Wang on a new sculpture and statue for Starcraft III for Blizzard Entertainment. Kayla created a Frankenstein makeup for a Jib.Jib.com infomercial with Simpat Beshirian as her assistant.
Graduate Simpat Beshirian has been keeping busy with many projects, he was one of four makeup artists doing makeup on the band members of “Combichrist” for their music video with guest Bill Moseley. Simpat worked on two projects with current Master student Scott Willis, they made a 6′ Cherry pie for the tv show “Pushing Daisies” and fabricated body parts and did FX for a SAG short called “Safe”. He was key makeup for 2 SAG Shorts, one a Gangster movie and the other a Vampire, doing character makeup, blood FX and dental appliances, he has another 2 films on the way, as well as working on a SAG short called “1881 Zombies” shot at the White Horse Ranch in Landers CA doing Special Make-up/Blood and Gore FX!
